Maya
This acrylic painting is inspired by one of the illustrations from the “Women of the World” Coloring Book that you can find here.
A Trip to Guatemala
I went to Guatemala in 2014 and got to visit Mayan communities that inspired the original illustration that I made for the coloring book that later turned into this painting.
Guatemala, 2014
Mayan women in Guatemala, like many indigenous communities around the world, have a rich cultural heritage and play significant roles in their families and communities. The Maya civilization has a long history in Mesoamerica, and despite centuries of cultural change and external influences, many Maya communities in Guatemala maintain traditional practices.
The clothing is colorful and intricately woven, with specific designs and patterns that may identify the wearer's village or ethnic group. The traditional attire is not only a symbol of cultural identity but also a reflection of the women's craftsmanship and skills in weaving.

Mayan Weaving
Weaving is a traditional art form among Mayan women, and it holds deep cultural significance. Women create intricate textiles using traditional backstrap looms, incorporating various colors and patterns. Each community may have its distinctive weaving style, and patterns can convey specific meanings or tell stories. Textiles serve as both functional items and works of art.
